Friday 18 August 2017 7.30pm - Kammer Philharmonia KÖLN, Chamber Philharmonia Cologne will play a concert of classical music by famous European composers as part of their UK tour, supported by Mercedes-Benz. Ticket costs tba. Their orchestra of 10 players includes some outstanding musicians. They played in Aberdaron once before in the summer of 2013 to a standing ovation from a sell-out audience.

They now live overlooking Carlingford Lough, in Co. Down, N. Ireland. The reviews of their latest album 'In America' (recorded in Nashville) are sensational, eg "Staggeringly good...truly magical guitar work, vocals to lift your heart and soul, with songs that are utterly unforgettable."

Monday 6 November 2017 7.30pm - The acclaimed Mid Wales Opera will present their touring production of a one act opera 'The Bear' by William Walton. Based on the play of the same name by Anton Chekov, this opera, written and sung in English, was composed by Walton in 1967 for the Aldeburgh Festival (so 2017 is its 50th anniversary year). It concerns a widow, Mme Popova, unendingly mourning the death of her husband, to the admonishment of her manservant Luka. She is visited upon by a rough-hewn land agent Smirnov (the “bear” of the title), demanding repayment of debts owed by Popova’s late husband. Popova refuses to pay and a row ensues, culminating in a duel during which the two appear to have fallen unexpectedly in love.

The opera is full of fun, entertainment, comedy, parody and great tunes! It is performed by three singers and five musicians in a new performing edition by MWO’s new Music Director Jonathan Lyness, licenced for MWO by Oxford University Press with the backing of the William Walton Trust. It will be directed and designed by Artistic Director Richard Studer. The evening will also include other operatic excerpts, specially chosen for the specific venue, performed by musicians and singers, with interviews, questions and discussions with members of MWO about the company’s work and opera in general. Tickets £10 Adults, £5 Children and Students

Tickets for all these concerts will be available from Eleri Stores, Aberdaron, they can be reserved for collection on the night by phoning Betty Wood 01758 730794 or at the door on the night (subject to space). See our website www.st-hywyn.org.uk for more details.
